What is it?

This is an ultrasound examination to assess the bowel.

Which conditions can be diagnosed/assessed?

There are a wide range of conditions for which intestinal ultrasound can be used. Some of these include:

  • Constipation
  • Crohn’s Disease
  • Ulcerative Colitis
  • Diverticulitis
  • Bloating and bacterial overgrowth
How does it work?

As with any ultrasound, this technology uses soundwaves to create images. The soundwaves are released from a probe which bounce off different organs at various frequencies and ultimately an image is created using these on a screen.

This procedure is performed in the clinic setting.

Preparation

There is NO preparation involved for this test. You are also not required to fast.

The following are some reasons why intestinal ultrasounds are a useful test:

  • No fasting is involved
  • No preparation is involved
  • It only takes 15 minutes
  • It is done in a clinic setting
  • No radiation is involved
  • There are NO risks involved
